The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It is made up of 2,711 stars that are embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.

A current HWOF member can nominate you for a star or if you have made significant contributions in movies, television or radio. A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.

The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce pays half of the $12.50 fee to the artist or organization. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs receives the remaining half.

Once the artist has received his/her star, he/she becomes eligible to be included in the HWOF. To be eligible to list on the HWOF you will need to pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce all outstanding balance. The amount due depends on how many years ago you were first nominated. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.

To remove yourself from HWOF, contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They will help you pay the remaining debt. They will remove your name from this list.

How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?

Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. To receive a star, one must be alive at that time. One can still be nominated after receiving a star after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. If no relatives are living, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may place a memorial stone in front of your star.

Why not just have stars on every street?

The HWOF is not meant to be a historical monument. It is meant as a memorial to all who contributed to the history of film.

What happened to all the stars stolen? Around 1,200 stars were taken by the thieves. Each star weighs between 250-300 lbs, so if you add up all the weight, that comes out to about 4 tons worth of stars!
