It is made up of 2,711 stars that are embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. There are currently 1,922 living persons listed on the HWOF.
To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. You will also receive a bronze plaque engraved with your name. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.
If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The fee is then paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at $12.50. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.

You would be responsible for $10,000 if you had been nominated previously in 1980.
If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.
