How To

How to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star

In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF is located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. It is made up of 2,711 stars that are embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. There are currently 1,922 living persons listed on the HWOF.

To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. After being approved, you will be issued a certificate stating your name, date and place of birth. It also includes information about your occupation, occupation and category. You will also receive a bronze plaque engraved with your name. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.

If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The fee is then paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at $12.50. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.

After the artist has been awarded his/her star, they are eligible to join the HWOF. To be listed on the HWOF, you must pay the remaining balance owed to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due will vary depending on how long ago you were nominated. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. You would be responsible for $10,000 if you had been nominated previously in 1980.

If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.

How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?

To be nominated, one must be at least 18 years. To receive a Star, one must still be living at the time. One can still be nominated after receiving a star after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. If there are no known living relatives, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place the memorial marker in front of it.

Why can't people choose to use a different street than having stars all over the place?

The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It is meant as a memorial to all who contributed to the history of film.

What happened to the stolen stars? The thieves took approximately 1,200 stars. Each star is approximately 250-300 lbs in weight. That's about 4 tons of stars!
