FAQ
How much of the box-office revenue is spent on marketing budgets?
Marketing budgets often account for 20%-40% of the film's budget. This is because marketing is very important to the success of any film.
Without marketing, nobody will know anything about your film. People won't pay for it if they don’t know about it.
How much does Hollywood earn in a single year?
A movie takes around $100 million to create. So if you made ten movies a year for a decade, you'd have enough money to buy a small country.
You would own your own island, with an airport, a power plant, a bank, a post office, a police force, a fire department, a school system, a hospital, a zoo, a sports stadium, a theater, and a cinema.
If this sounds like it's not fun, then you might be insane.
Can I form my own distribution business?
No. A distributor is required to operate a distribution firm.
Even though you might not be distribution films for other people, there are still rules.
You cannot, for instance, charge different prices at different theaters. Additionally, fees cannot be charged to different customers.
Your services cannot be sold to any company.
Why is it that so few independent films are ever released?
Indie filmmakers often assume that distributors will pick up their films.
Because they are confident that the public will love their film, they believe distributors would be willing to buy it.
However, this is seldom the case. Distributors often benefit from independent filmmakers.
They will use techniques such as delaying the release of a movie until after the awards season has ended.
They might delay the release of low-budget films until after the summer blockbuster series has begun.
Distributors are also trying to keep films off the streets until audiences have already spent hundreds upon thousands of dollars on tickets or popcorn.
They don't wish to lose those profits.

How to get an honor star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It consists of 2,711 stars embedded into the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.
To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.
If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do, they send a letter to the applicant's home address explaining their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce then sends $25 to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues a check payable the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then sends the check directly to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The other half goes to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. To be included in the HWOF, your balance must be paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due will vary depending on how long ago you were nominated. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.
You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.
