FAQ

Why is it that so few independent films are ever released?

Indie filmmakers often assume that distributors will pick up their films.

They are certain distributors will take their films, as they know that the public will love them.

But this is rare. Distributors often profit from independent filmmakers.

They might delay a film’s release date until after the awards show has finished.

They may delay the release of a low budget film until after summer blockbuster season begins.

Distributors also try to keep films away from audiences until they've already spent hundreds of dollars on tickets, popcorn, or candy.

They don't want these profits to be lost.

Why is Hollywood calling it Hollywood?

D.W. Griffith was the one who founded California's first film industry. It was named after Los Angeles, at the time known as Hollywood.

The name stuck because it was such an exciting place for people to visit. It was a place that people would travel from all walks of the globe to experience.

Today, Hollywood is still very much part of our culture. There are movies, TV shows, music videos and commercials. And we call them all "Hollywood."

What is the difference between an independent film and a film in another language?

A film made independently is typically done by one filmmaker, who makes all the decisions.

The opposite is true for foreign language films. They are usually produced by a larger production company.

They often hire actors, writers, and directors from other countries.

Professional translators are also available to ensure that the dialogue sounds natural.

What percentage of the box office goes to marketing budgets?

Marketing budgets account for approximately 20% to 40% of film budgets. This is because marketing plays a vital role in any film's success.

No one will know about your film if you don't do good marketing. No one will pay for your film if they don't know about it.

Hollywood is famous for what?

The simple answer was yes. They took risks and did something different to make it popular. They made films that people would recall for years.

They were also willing to try out new ideas.

What is the difference of a producer and distributor?

The movie is produced by a producer. The distributor distributes the movie. Producers can sell their movies directly to theaters, distributors, or other companies like Netflix. Distributors purchase movies directly from producers. Distributors then sell the movies to theaters, cable networks, and streaming services.

Distributors must negotiate with theater owners where their movies will be shown. This could mean that certain theaters may charge more for a particular movie than others. If you want your movie to be seen by as many people as possible, you should choose a distributor with many theaters.

  • In 2019, that percentage increased to 40 percent. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • "[116]"38% of films employed 0 or 1 woman in the roles considered, 23% employed two women, 28% employed 3 to 5 women, and 10% employed 6 to 9 women. (en.wikipedia.org)
  • By 1911, approximately 60 to 70 percent of films imported into Great Britain were American. (en.wikipedia.org)

How To

How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF can be found at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. It has 2,711 stars embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.

To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque is attached on a concrete base at the star.

A current HWOF member can nominate you for a star or if you have made significant contributions in movies, television or radio. The nominations are evaluated by a committee, which then decides whether or not to approve them. If they decide to approve, they write a letter to the address of the applicant explaining their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.

The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays artists or organizations whose applications were accepted. The fee is then paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce at $12.50. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.

After the artist has been awarded his/her star, they are eligible to join the HWOF. To be eligible for the HWOF, the artist must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce any balance. The amount due will vary depending on how long ago you were nominated. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. You'd owe $10,000 if you were previously nominated in 1990.

If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will remove the name of your from the list.

How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?

When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. To receive a Star, one must still be living at the time. One can still be nominated after receiving a star after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.

Why can't people choose to use a different street than having stars all over the place?

The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It honors those who made history through film.

What happened to all the stars stolen? The thieves stole around 1,200 stars. Each star is between 250-300 lbs. If you add all of the weight together, it comes to approximately 4 tons of stars!
