How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF is located in Los Angeles at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It has 2,711 stars embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star is a symbol of someone who contributed to the production of motion pictures, television, radio and theater or other aspects popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.
To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. A bronze plaque with your name inscribed on it is also included. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.
You can apply for a star if a current member of the HWOF nominated you or if you made significant contributions to movies, television, radio, theatre, music, or something else considered part of "popular culture." A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they decide to approve, they write a letter to the address of the applicant explaining their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues a check payable the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then sends the check directly to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the applicant or organization. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.
Once the artist receives his/her star he/she will be eligible to be inducted into the HWOF. To be eligible for the HWOF, the artist must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce any balance. The amount due will vary depending on how long ago you were nominated. If you were first nominated for a nomination in 1990, your owe $15,000. You would be responsible for $10,000 if you had been nominated previously in 1980.
Contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to get your name removed from the HWOF and to repay any outstanding debts. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.
